Leopards of Jawai and Bera, Rajasthan
In Africa and in India, Leopards are one of the most elusive large mammals to find on safari. Yet, unlikely areas, such as Jawai and Bera in Rajasthan, exist, where one has a wonderful opportunities to see the Leopard in the wild.
In Western Rajasthan, near the Jawai River, lies a scrub-like landscape full of large granite boulders that are home to around 50 leopards. Sloth Bears, Rusty Spotted Cat, Striped Hyaena and Nilgai co-exist with this apex predator amongst the benevolent protection offered by local tribes of the area such as the Rabari Tribe. It is not a protected area, yet the man-animal conflict remains in equilibrium. A shining light of the benevolent nature of many tribal communities in India.
Jeep Safaris in this landscape are beautiful, as are the canoe safaris at the Jawai Dam - Rajasthan's largest dam. Flamingoes, Demoiselle and Common Crane, Indian Courser, Laggar Falcon, Indian Eagle Owl, and lots of Waders, offer excellent birding at Jawai and Bera. This landscape is a must see destination in India for wildlife, culture, and adventure.
