Asiatic Lion in India
The last abode of the Asiatic Lion.
It is a stunning success story of conservation where this species was for all constructive purposes, wiped out of existence from its home in Central and South Asia. Today 400 lions roam at Gir, and they share their landscape around another formidable cat : the Leopard.

The forests are dry deciduous Teak forests, with scrub and grasslands which are perfect habitat for these magnificient creatures.
Here, the Lion hunts mainly Deer, Wild Boar and Nilgai. There are several instances of Lions going after livestock – yet there seem to be no retaliatory killings, such is the regard for the lions which the local villagers have.
However, when the Lions venture into towns, there are several cases of largely ignorant persons who take advantage of the Lions docile attitude towards man.
This is an iconic species and we hope that they will be able to spread out and reclaim some of their lost grounds in Central India. They were once found in Eastern Europe in Turkey, the Middle East and large parts of Central Asia.

The Lion in India lives in the shadow of the Tiger and in that of the African Lion as well, rather unfairly. This is probably due to the landscape of dry, human filled landscape of Gir in Gujarat. However, let us not forget that this is the last abode of the Asiatic Lion in the world and a must visit destination on the Indian Wildlife Safari circuit.

Land of the Blackbuck, Hyena, and Grey Wolf.
Land of Harriers, Blackbuck, Striped Hyena, and Grey Wolf.

A small fragmented grassland of Western India, these scrub forests are rich in wildlife and offer amazing views of subcontinent wildlife that are rarely seen elsewhere. The National Park is only 35 sq km, yet it is an immersive experience in deeply rare terrains that are the grasslands of India.

Situated in in the Bhal region near the Gulf of Khambhat. Its landscape is a mosaic of Dense and Sparse Grasslands, Saline Flats, Tidal Mudflats, and Prosopis Shrubland, periodically influenced by Tidal Inundation from the Gulf, which, along with the Semi-Arid Climate, creates a dynamic habitat for diverse flora and fauna.

The park is celebrated for harboring India’s largest population of Blackbuck Antelope, often seen in large herds bounding across the golden grasslands, as well as significant numbers of Nilgai (Blue Bull), and a healthy population of the endangered Indian Wolf, Striped Hyena, Indian Fox, Golden Jackal, and Jungle Cat.
Birdlife is a major highlight, with over 140 species recorded; Velavadar is globally renowned for hosting the world’s largest winter roost of migratory Harriers—Montagu’s Harrier, Pallid Harrier, and Marsh Harrier—while also supporting rare and endangered species such as the Lesser Florican and Sarus Crane. Seasonal Wetlands and Mudflats attract Flamingos, Pelicans, Storks, Cranes, and a variety of Waterfowl, thus providing sanctuary for a diverse range of wonderful wildlife.
Where Salt meets the Sky
The Little Rann of Kutch in Gujarat is an extraordinary Salt Marsh and Seasonal Wetland ecosystem
Spanning approximately 5,000 square kilometers, this arid landscape transforms dramatically during the Monsoon, when Tidal Inundation and Rainwater create vast Wetlands, while the rest of the year it remains a stark, saline Desert dotted with about 74 elevated Plateaus known as Bets.
These Bets, with their Xerophytic Vegetation and Grasslands, provide vital habitat for a remarkable array of wildlife, most famously the world’s last population of the Asiatic Wild Ass (Khur). Other key mammals include the Indian Wolf, Desert Fox, Jungle Cat, Desert Cat, Nilgai, and Chinkara.
LRK is a globally significant site for avian diversity, hosting nearly 300 Bird Species, including spectacular congregations of Greater Flamingo, Lesser Flamingo, Common Crane, Demoiselle Crane, Dalmatian Pelican, and Sarus Crane. The region’s dynamic ecology also supports rare species such as the Sociable Lapwing, McQueen’s Bustard, Stoliczka’s Bush Chat, and White-naped Tit, while the Wetlands and Mudflats attract immense flocks of Waterfowl, Waders, and Raptors like the Pallid Harrier, Montagu’s Harrier, and Imperial Eagle. This unique Ecotone, where Marine and Terrestrial Ecosystems meet, is renowned for its vast, shifting habitats and the spectacular bird and wildlife congregations that define its natural history
